Spellbrew

Something’s brewing.
Can you spell it?

A word game for Discord. No spellcheck, no timer. Play real words, play fake ones, and argue with your friends about which is which.

Add to Discord Play in our server Free to play. 2–4 players.
A Spellbrew board: purple potion bottles spelling CAULDRON, WITCH, POTION and more, floating in green brew inside a cauldron.

How it works

For 2 to 4 brewers. Take your time.

You’ll need

  • A Discord server
  • A friend or three
  • A little nerve

Method

  1. Tap New game and pick who’s playing.
  2. Take turns placing words. (Almost) any word goes.
  3. Think a word is fake? Hit Challenge. Fakes lose their points. Wrong guesses lose a turn.
  4. At the end, The Trials reveal every bluff nobody caught.

Right in your server

Every game gets its own thread, so your main chat stays clean. Tap a button to play, check your shelf, or call someone’s bluff.

A finished Spellbrew game in a Discord thread: the final board, the scores, and The Trials revealing a bluff nobody caught.

No one around? Play a cat.

Grimalkin, the witch’s cat, will play you any time. Tap Try it solo for an easy game, or pick Easy or Medium from New game.

It mostly plays real words, but it spends a lot of time on the internet, so now and then it tries something it found online.

It only challenges gibberish, so it’s a good place to practice your bluffing. Practice games don’t count on the leaderboard.

A black pixel-art cat with green eyes sits on the potion shelf beside bottles spelling C, A, T, while a potion tumbles off the end of the shelf.
A shelf of seven potion bottles: B, R, E, W, a golden unlabeled bottle, N and G.

No rush

Take your turn whenever you like: over breakfast, on the bus, three days later. The bot gently reminds whoever’s holding everyone up.

Real words come from the official tournament word lists. US and UK spellings both count, so nobody gets to argue about colour.

Full Moon Event

Once a month the cauldron transforms under the light of the full moon. Some words score double, potions can turn wild, and a werewolf hides among the players.

Yuletide arrives on the winter solstice: the Twelve Nights of Yule, 21 December to 1 January.

The same board under the full moon: silver potions and three golden wild potions with little wolf ears, in a midnight-blue brew with pale blue fire round the rim.

Questions you might have

Can we add our own words?
Yes. Admins can add house words with /houseword add, so your server’s inside jokes finally count. Or ban words with /houseword ban.
What counts as a real word?
Anything in the official tournament word lists, about 285,000 words. Yes, QI is a word.
Can I play on my own?
Yes. Grimalkin the witch’s cat will play you on Easy or Medium, or you can practice alone on an empty board. Neither counts on the leaderboard.
Do I need to learn a lot of commands?
No. Three buttons under the board do most of it. Every command is on the commands page if you want them.
Can we turn the events off?
Yes. Pick Classic rules for a game with no events and no werewolves.
One of us always wins. Can we even it out?
Yes. The host can give them a handicap so their words score less.
What if someone stops taking turns?
The bot sends reminders, and you can /nudge them. After a week, the game moves on without them.
Does it keep score over time?
Yes. Each server has a leaderboard, everyone has a /profile, and there are titles for the best bluffer and the best bluff-catcher.
Is it safe to add?
Yes. It only needs permission to post messages and make threads, and it can’t read your server’s messages. Slurs are the only words blocked from play. Admins can block more for their own server if they want.
